The expressionists are the artists who have most influenced my work. Throughout my career, I have merged expressionist techniques
and philosophy with the pursuit of my own ideas. I study reality but find I can only paint abstractly. Color, composition
and the history of color through the use of texture and layering of paint are important to me. I emphasize a sense of motion
in my compositions, moving the viewer's eye around the painting, while depth draws them in.
Evolution in my work is subtle. Geometric shapes are formed by hard straight lines. In the past, this aspect has receded
to the background, pushed there by expressive washes of color. Currently, just the opposite takes place. The lines and shapes
are forefront and highly defined. With the formation of basic structure, color composition becomes most important. Expressive
painting recedes to the back. The work appears to be more calculated, leaving less to chance.
My goal is to create colorful, eye-catching but serious paintings that speak to the viewer in an abstract language. Often
referred to as "fun", the imagery may seem lighthearted initially, and these works do have an enjoyable side. Upon
closer study however, I hope the viewer will realize the layering of ideas and textures that these paintings incorporate over
time, each possessing its own unique evolution.
